The biotech sector includes companies whose products benefit humans by treating diseases with life-saving treatments and drugs increasing yields on agricultural land and creating environmentally friendly chemicals and fuels. Bioinformatics is also a part of it, which is the study of biological processes and data. It is utilized in a variety of industries.

Biotech’s roots date back to the 1970s in the beginning when recombinant technology (genetic engineering) was invented and patent-protected. This technique enables scientists to splice genes into production cells which then begin to produce proteins that are valuable.

Today, many pharmaceutical companies have active target-discovery research programs that heavily rely on biotechnology. There are also small startups that use exclusive techniques to create therapeutic drugs.

Other biotechnology applications are being studied by companies that focus on agrobiology cosmetics as well as the environment, food technology, industrial biotechnology and nutraceuticals along with the field of veterinary medicine. Fully integrated Pharma companies are massive commercial companies that research, produce and sell generic or brand name drugs and medicines.

Biotech is changing as a result of new technologies. Companies can now test their systems for conditions that have well-understood mechanisms, such as sickle cell anemia, and reach more patients. Certain companies are working to come up with new therapies for diseases that have not been treated, like Duchenne muscle dystrophy.
